Flow Control in Reliable Multicast Protocol
نویسنده
چکیده
A Flow Control in Reliable Multicast transport protocol over combined (Fixed/Mobile) networks called (FCRM) is proposed. FCRM is based on a hierarchical structure where receivers are grouped into local regions. In each local region, there are special receivers, which are called Designated Receivers (DRs) and Mobile Agents (MAs). Each DR or MA is responsible for retransmission of requested packets to the receivers which belong to its local region. DRs and MAs send their acknowledgments periodically to the sender. They also process the acknowledgments sent to them from the Fixed Hosts (FHs) and Mobile Hosts (MHs) and they retransmit lost packets to the requesting receivers. In this paper each DR or MA sends its empty buffer size with the acknowledgment packet. Thus, when the sender calculates its available window, it compares the empty buffer sizes of all DRs and MAs and takes the smallest among them and compares this value with the value of the calculated available window and the available window is taken as the smaller of them. Simulations (using C++) have demonstrated the scalability of FCRM.

Efficient Reliable Multicast on Myrinet
Although multicast is an important communication primitive for parallel programming, many modern networks do not support it in hardware. Multicast can be implemented in software on such networks, using some spanning tree protocol. Making multicast reliable, however, is a difficult problem, even if the hardware point-to-point communication is reliable. The key issue is that a flow control mechan...
متن کاملAn efficient and fair reliable multicast protocol for 802.11-based wireless LANs
Many applications are inherently multicast in nature. Such applications can benefit tremendously from reliable multicast support at the MAC layer since addressing reliability at the MAC level is much less expensive than handling errors at the upper layers. However, the IEEE 802.11 MAC layer does not support reliable multicast. This void in the MAC layer is a limiting factor in the efficacy of m...
متن کاملPerformance study of a probabilistic multicast transport protocol
Traditional reliable multicast protocols depend on assumptions about flow control and reliability mechanisms, and they suffer from a kind of interference between these mechanisms. This in turn affects the overall performance, throughput and scalability of group applications utilizing these protocols. However, there exists a substantial class of distributed applications for which the throughput ...
متن کاملMTCP: Scalable TCP-like Congestion Control for Reliable Multicast
We present MTCP, a congestion control scheme for large-scale reliable multicast. Congestion control for reliable multicast is important, because of its wide applications in multimedia and collaborative computing, yet nontrivial, because of the potentially large number of receivers involved. Many schemes have been proposed to handle the recovery of lost packets in a scalable manner, but there is...
متن کاملReliable Multicasting in the Internet: Experience with the IRMA Architecture
In this paper, we present our experience with the IRMA reliable multicast architecture. IRMA guarantees reliable, sequenced, and loosely synchronized delivery of multicast streams by supporting TCP as the multicast transport protocol at the end hosts without modifications to the standard TCP/IP stack. To support TCP as the multicast transport protocol, IRMA provides ACK aggregation, local recov...
متن کاملEfficient Multicast on Myrinet using Link-Level Flow Control
This paper studies the implementation of efficient multicast protocols for Myrinet, a switched, wormhole-routed, Gigabit-per-second network technology. Since Myrinet does not support multicasting in hardware, multicast services must be implemented in software. We present a new, efficient, and reliable software multicast protocol that uses the network interface to efficiently forward multicast t...
